Medical Specialists provide their clients with medical diagnosis, treatment, and monitoring of specific illnesses, diseases, or injuries related to their field of specialization. They examine clients, conduct tests or analyses, prescribe therapy or medications, and give advice for recovery and improvement from specific conditions. There are five areas of specialization covering many fields of treatment:
- Medicine: anesthesiology, cardiology, dermatology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, medical genetics, geriatrics, hematology, clinical immunology and allergy, internal medicine, emergency medicine, nephrology, neurology, medical oncology, pediatrics, physical medicine, pulmonology, psychiatry, rheumatology.
- Surgery: cardiac surgery, general surgery, orthopedic surgery, plastic surgery, neurosurgery, obstetrics and gynecology, ophthalmology, ear, nose and throat specialist, urology.
- Radiology: nuclear medicine, diagnostic radiology, radiation oncology.
- Laboratory work: pathology, medical biochemistry, medical microbiology and infectious diseases.
- Community-based health support: practice in hospitals, nursing and long-term care homes, CLSCs, and private clinics.

- Medical specialists have an MD and have internships as well as four to six years of residence in the chosen specialty. The specialties offered vary among medical schools and may include a master’s degree or postdoctoral studies:
