Talking About Suicide Saves Lives – Suicide Prevention Week (February 4-10)

Image created from AQPS Comment parler du suicide.

This week, February 4 to 10, is Suicide Prevention Week in Quebec and the theme is “Talking about suicide saves lives.”

In 2015, 1,128 Quebecers took their own lives (according to the province’s latest data from the Institut national de santé publique). This is 3 suicides per day- a statistic that’s triple the number of road fatalities in the province.  As well, the highest suicide rates are men between the ages of 45 and 64 years old, who are also the least likely to seek help.

People are encouraged to break the silence whether they have suicidal thoughts, have heard a loved one express suicidal thoughts or have seen someone who has withdrawn or is depressed.

Do not keep suicidal thoughts to yourself!

Help is available for you, whether through a friend, therapist, or member of the clergy. Find someone you trust and let them know how bad things are. This can be your first step on the road to healing.   Please visit the Canadian Association For Suicide Prevention for more detailed information about understanding suicide and how to help a loved one.

There Are Many Crisis Centres Available 24/7 to talk to you (See below for resources in the Outouais)

The last thing that most people expect is that they will run out of reasons to live. But if you are experiencing suicidal thoughts, you need to know that you’re not alone. By some estimates, as many as one in six people will become seriously suicidal at some point in their lives.

If you or someone you know are in crisis now, please call any of the crisis line numbers listed below or dial the local emergency telephone number (911) in your area.

If you are calling because of a mental health problem or are seeking additional information, you can also call Info-Santé at 8-1-1, option 2, or if calling from a 613 cellphone, please call 819-966-0180.
