Self-Esteem & Healthy Body Image: Wrap-Up & Resources Shared

We would like to thank our parents who attended our workshop on “Self-Esteem and Healthy Body Image.”  A huge thank you as well to our guest presenter, Mylène Dault, PhD Kinesiologist, at les Ateliers Silhouette, for such an informative and engaging presentation.  Thank you!

It was a great session and an opportunity for parents to learn about healthy body image. Mylène spoke to us about different strategies to help our daughters and sons maintain a positive body image and find their sense of self when their world is filled with unrealistic images of physical ideals.  She spoke about how parents are the first and most significant role models in their child’s life and how important it is for parents to model positive feelings toward their own body image, nutrition and exercise.  You can do this by:

  • Modelling positive self esteem and body image: As a parent, your child can see all the good things bodies can do, and this by:
    • Having a healthy lifestyle,
    • Being active,
    • Eating well (Canada’s Food Guide; cooking together, eating together and enjoying food);
    • and feeling good about yourself.
  • Building strong relationships with your child:  Good communication and less family stress will help your child develop a positive body image.  It will also allow you to ask questions about their feelings and know what is going on with your child.
  • Encouraging your child to be active by doing a physical activity they enjoy. When a child exercise to improve their health, instead of to lose or gain weight, they are more likely to have a positive body image because of good self-esteem. They can learn to appreciate what their bodies can do, instead of how it looks to others.
  • Helping your child develop and value their strengths and abilities. Helping them to find an enjoyable activity, such as arts, sports, music or yoga, allows them to learn about their spiritual, intellectual, emotional physical or social qualities. This allows them to define themselves based on their inner, not outer, qualities.

What did our attendees think?

Engaged speaker. Relatable examples.

Very dynamic and informative. Speaker was extremely well-informed. Engaging and passionate about topic.

Very knowledgeable presenter with a variety of information.

Liked how it made us realize, as parents we portray beauty with comments, positive or negative, and children absorb that.

The presentation was great.  Useful info & things to say.
