All About Learning, Emotions, Sleep & Communication for Children 2-5

The following information sheets are the result of a collaboration between the Ministère de la Santé et des Services sociaux and Naître et grandir.

The sheets are intended for all parents of children aged between 2 and 5 years old. They can also be useful to anyone who wants to better equip themselves to face the challenges of everyday life with young children.

They cover the following topics : managing emotions, discipline, development, nutrition, communication and sleep.

The sheets include tips to help parents with their day to day life. They are not intended to resolve specific and complex situations.

Following Rules

Knowing what is and isn’t allowed is reassuring for a 2 to 5 year-old child. Your role is to set the rules.

Each rule must be:

  • Clear;
  • Concrete;
  • Coherent;
  • Consistent;
  • Logical.

Keeping your home safe and secure helps reduce the number of rules you need to set.

  • Store cleaning products, medication, cat litter and other small objects out of your child’s reach; cover electrical outlets and install a barrier for the stairs. Your child will be free to have fun without always hearing “No!”

Join Joanne Doucette, MSW, RSW, Registered Social Worker at the Child, Adolescent and Family Centre of Ottawa, as she discusses the emotion coaching approach, which provides parents with skills they can use to soothe and support children experiencing big emotions.

Feeling Emotions

Your role as a parent is to allow them to experience and express all of their emotions.

If your child is sulking, it’s probably because they don’t know how else to respond to emotion.

Check-out the infographics for more advice.

Eating

Feeding a child can be puzzling at times. Your role is to provide regular, well-balances meals in a pleasant setting.

Sleep

Bedtime can be challenging for young children. Your role is to establish a bedtime routine that meets your child’s needs.

Communication

Many people play a role in the life of a child. Good communication with these individuals can help you with everyday challenges.

Learn

Children have EVERYTHING to learn. Your job is to help your little when they encounter new challenges.
