#YouAsked: “Is it the Flu or Gastroenteritis? Should I Self-Treat, See a Doctor, or Go to the ER?”

The Santé et service sociaux Québec offers two great visuals, the Decision Assistant for the Flu and the Decision Assistant for Gastroenteritis.  These quick fact sheets provides information about the steps you can take and first response services you can count on when you need them, depending on the seriousness of your flu or gastroenteritis symptoms.

Still not sure? Consider contacting Info-Santé: a free service available 24/7 to answer any questions regarding your physical health or that of a family member. You will be connected to a nurse who will give you advice and who can direct you to the proper service (such as a medical clinic or hospital emergency ward).  Info-social complements Info-Santé by connecting you to a qualified social worker 24/7. By calling 8-1-1, you can consult a social worker who will evaluate the situation and direct you to the appropriate psychosocial service.

Free flu vaccines are still available.  For those who are eligible for the free flu vaccine, you can still book your appointment today through the Portail Click Santé or by calling 819-966-6277 or toll-free 1-844-351-6277.  If you are not eligible for the free vaccine, you can still get vaccinated. Since the fee may vary, you can contact the vaccination clinic of your choice (CLSC, medical clinic or pharmacy) to find out how much it will cost.  To find out where to get vaccinated, go to the Government of Québec’s Webpage: Where to get vaccinated.

If You Have a Family Doctor. Contact the clinic or Family Medicine Group (GMF) where you normally see your doctor to know if consultations on the same or next day are available. If your doctor or another physician from their group cannot see you, it is possible that your clinic or GMF refer you to another clinic where you can be received. You can verify if consultations on the same or next day are available by searching the name of your clinic or GMF on the Finding a Resource page.

If You Do Not Have a Family Doctor, or if Your Family Doctor is Not Available. Some resources provide medical consultations on the same or next day. To find a walk-in clinic in your area, you can search by postal code or by region on the Government of Québec’s webpage Finding a Resource.

Consider visiting a Winter Clinic.  Until March 2020, there are three Winter Clinics open for non-urgent health care or to get psychosocial help (i.e., flu symptoms, gastroenteritis and other conditions).  These Winter Clinics offer increased medical services for the entire population, irrespective of whether or not people are registered with a family doctor or what their health condition is. These Winter Clinics are open in the evenings and on weekends. The three Winter Clinics in the Outaouais include: Clinique MédiGo, Clinique Familiale de Hull, OmniClinique de l’Outaouais. For more detailed information, visit the Government of Québec webpage on Winter Clinics.

Have you registered for a Family Doctor? To find a family doctor who is accepting new patients, you can add your name to the Québec Government’s centralized online tool: Guichet d’accès à  un médecin de famille / Québec Family Doctor Finder (GAMF).
