Parents Learn About the Legal Issues Encountered During Separation & Divorce | Connexions Information Session

We would like to thank our parents for attending last week’s information session on “Untying the Legal Knot.” It was a great session and an opportunity for parents to ask questions and to learn more about the legal issues that are encountered during separation and divorce, to demystify the differences between common-law (i.e., de facto union) relationships and marriage, as well as to share information on child custody, child support and parental authority.

We would like to thank Khisnika Dassoruth and Joshua Chmielewski, law students at the University of Ottawa, for such a dynamic and engaging presentation- and for answering all of our questions!

The evening began with a look at commonly used terms and legal phrases related to separation and divorce including: “de facto union,” “common law,” “family patrimony” and “community of property.”  Our law students presented detailed information and share various print and online resources, about the rights and responsibilities of the couple in a marriage and de facto union, how these differ when it comes to separation of family property/patrimony,  how child support and custody is determined and the importance of participating in mediation.
