#YouAsked “How can I help my child get ready for kindergarten?”

  • Read to your child every day. Read adventure books, books about feelings and emotions, books about how much you love them and magical books about unicorns and fairies!
  • Give them plenty of opportunities to socialize with friends. It’s also a great way to learn how to laugh, act silly, and use their imagination!
  • Play with your child.  Have fun with board games or card games, make a craft, build with blocks or make a puzzle. Let your child teach you how to paint the grass purple, the sky green and give dogs six legs!
  • Get outside with your child and explore the outdoors. Let them take the lead as they discover our wondrous world!
  • Give your child the opportunity to play alone and to grow their imaginative-play. Let them blow bubbles, make daisy chains, bake mud pies, skip to their favourite song or pretend they are super-heroes!
  • Enjoy role playing games, dress-up or play with hand puppets. Have their “characters” talk about emotions or how they may feel when starting kindergarten!
  • Give your child time to talk to you about their fears by helping them write a story or draw a picture about their first day at kindergarten, or cuddle up with them and read a book about starting school.
  • And most importantly: remind them how brilliant, creative, big-hearted and amazing they are!

Here’s some great books to share with your child:
