The Service de police de la Ville de Gatineau (SPVG) is alerting the community to a recent wave of fraud cases involving imposters posing as bank employees, postal workers, or even police officers. Over the past few months, scammers have contacted victims by phone, claiming their bank cards were compromised. These fraudsters then either send someone to collect the cards in person or ask victims to put their cards in an envelope and leave them in their mailbox. The stolen cards are then used to make unauthorized transactions.
How to Stay Safe:
- If you receive a call like this, hang up immediately and call your bank directly using the number on your card.
- Never hand over your cards or share personal information with anyone you haven’t verified.
- Remember, banks will never ask you to leave your cards in your mailbox or collect them in person. They will instead issue a replacement card by mail or at the branch.
