In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, Diabetes Canada developed a Diabetes Education Line to help people affected by diabetes navigate the pandemic and to help fill gaps in care.
The education line is a free, virtual care telephone program where you can get health advice or information related to your diabetes self-management. Within 24-48 hours of placing a call/email to Diabetes Canada’s 1-800-BANTING (226-8464) helpline or email , you will be referred for health advice or information from a Certified Diabetes Educator (CDE). CDEs are registered nurses, dietitians, social workers, and pharmacists. The line is 100% confidential and available in English and French.
What type of care is provided?
CDEs can provide the following care:
- Direct you to the most appropriate level of care by helping you decide whether to handle the problem yourself, visit a primary care physician or nurse practitioner, go to a clinic, contact a community service, or go to a hospital emergency room.
- Provide diabetes-specific information, education, and/or linking to resources.
- Provide health information and/or answer questions that promote diabetes self-management.
- Provide diabetes care and self-management education. This can include assessing your specific needs; helping identify and set specific diabetes self-management goals; and planning and implementing the education and/or behavioural intervention directed toward helping you achieve the identified self-management goals.
