Special Care Counsellor

Conseiller en soins spéciaux

Special Care Counsellors work in a variety of settings with persons who have physical, mental, emotional, and/or behavioural needs. Their clients may be experiencing trauma through violence, physical or substance abuse, or accidents, and need support in gaining more autonomy as they reintegrate into society. They observe clients’ attitudes and behaviors, participate in needs assessments, develop individual action plans, facilitate individual and group activities, and make periodic assessments to monitor individual progress and adaptation. Special Care Counsellors may also work in inclusive and special education to address students’ language and learning difficulties. They can work in a variety of settings, such as educational institutions (pre-school to higher education), short and long-term care facilities, hospitals, rehabilitation centres, CLSCs, residences for the elderly, shelters, group homes, and other social services facilities.
